Reit im Winkl has its advantages in every season, but autumn is undoubtedly my favourite. The hustle and bustle and heat of summer fade, the sunlight becomes softer, the air smells of wet leaves and nature glows in its most beautiful warm colours.
Autumn is also harvest time. The many vegetables, fruits and game meat from local forests and meadows can be enjoyed wonderfully in the local restaurants and pubs and make autumn not only the most beautiful season for me, but also the most delicious.
We Bavarians love to celebrate. It's no coincidence that the biggest folk festival in the world takes place in the Bavarian capital. However, the "rustic" festivities take place in the local communities. If you want to experience Bavarian cosiness up close, I recommend the numerous festivals and celebrations in the region, with brass band music, traditional dances and performances.
But my personal highlight is the regional specialities offered by the locals and the local taverns. Anyone who has ever tasted a crispy butter noodle with compote, warm “Almnüsse” with cinnamon and sugar or a fruity plum dessert knows what treasures there are to discover.
My favourite view of Reit im Winkl is through the podcast "Hörwinkl" :)
Hiking tips from the forester, spooky legends about talking boundary stones or a tutoring course in the local dialect. I really like the podcast because it doesn't show Reit im Winkl as a static panorama. Instead, it provides a view through the eyes of the locals and does so with plenty of humour and enthusiasm. It's also good to listen to on the way to the next summit cross.
