Herreninsel island

The island of Herrenchiemsee can be reached from Prien and Gstadt all year round with the boats of Chiemsee Schifffahrt, in summer also from Übersee, Chieming, Seebruck and Bernau.

In contrast to the Fraueninsel island, the Herreninsel is inhabited by a few people all year round, but can boast a well-known tourist attraction in the Chiemgau: Herrenchiemsee Castle.

The castle is open to the public and the interior can be visited at any time during a regular tour. It was built in 1878-85 by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a replica of the well-known Palace of Versailles, but it was never fully completed. The King Ludwig II Museum is located in the south wing of the building.

The New Castle, the former Augustinian monastery and the museum can be visited all year round.
