Hiking trail through the Klausenbach gorge
© © Markus Schmuck

It looks wild, the Klausenbach gorge, a bit gloomy, lonely and mysterious, very different compared to lovely alpine meadows with peacefully grazing cows. No wonder that the gorge had once been a smuggler's route...

The Klausenbach river rushes unhindered down the slopes of the Klausenberg mountain on its way to the Lofer river, into which it flows a little further north.

Somewhat protected from the water, with wooden bridges, railings and wooden steps, you can hike through the gorge on the Klausenbachklamm premium hiking trail (3 hours in total). You should be somewhat surefooted and wear good shoes, because the path can be wet and slippery.

This is precisely what makes the gorge interesting for children of course - in summer they can take part in a night hike by torchlight or abseil down the walls of the gorge (as part of the children's programme). By the way, electricity is also produced in the gorge!

Klausenbachklamm can be reached in a few minutes walking from the Blindau hiking car park. Nearby places to stop for refreshments are the Klausenbergalm and the Zwerchenbergalm (drinks only). The gorge is ideal for hot summer days when you are looking for shade and a cool stream.

By the way: admission to the gorge is free!
